Sa blessure à l’œil a ruiné une partie importante de sa saison. Quand Thierry Van Cleemput doit sélectionner un adjectif du dictionnaire pour qualifier la saison 2018 de David Goffin, il ne tourne pas autour du pot. Il refuse en effet de se voiler la face. "Nous sortons d’une saison mitigée, dit-il. Il n’a pas brillé sur deux Grands Chelems et a sorti un résultat correct sur les deux autres. Son ratio de points n’est pas inintéressant vu le temps passé sur le terrain. Il a réalisé de bonnes performances, mais il faut revoir sa saison dans son contexte."
