Le n° 1 mondial a nettement dominé Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. C’était le match phare de la journée. Celui que tout le public de Melbourne attendait. D’un côté, Novak Djokovic, n° 1 mondial et grand favori du tournoi. De l’autre, un ambitieux Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, 33 ans et de retour aux affaires après une année 2018 très difficile (blessure au genou) et désireux de jouer à fond son rôle d’outsider.
