Kim Clijsters aura attendu plus de quatre ans et autant de finales perdues (dont trois face à Justine Henin) avant de remporter un premier titre du Grand Chelem à l’US Open 2005. Fin 2003, elle atteint pourtant déjà la première place du classement WTA, devenant la première belge à réaliser cet exploit. Il est d’autant plus retentissant qu’elle atteint simultanément ce classement en simple et en double.

Elle redeviendra numéro 1 en 2006 et 2011 et soulèvera au total deux trophées de l’US Open et un à l’Australian Open.
