L’offre de 4 millions d’euros des New England Revolution avait été acceptée par le Standard. En janvier dernier, le Standard avait reçu une offre ferme de la part du club de MLS des New England Revolution pour Paul-José Mpoku. À l’époque, les décideurs liégeois avaient éconduit leurs homologues américains et Paul-José Mpoku était resté à quai alors qu’une belle opération financière s’annonçait pour l’international congolais.
