Critiqué avant le tournoi, Didier Deschamps a malgré tout avancé, guidé par cette deuxième étoile Lui-même s’en amusait. "Je rejoins Zagallo et Beckenbauer ? Eux sont de meilleurs techniciens." Didier Deschamps a peut-être moins de talent intrinsèque que le Brésilien et l’Allemand qu’il juge "plus beaux à voir jouer" , mais il a remporté comme eux la Coupe du Monde en tant que joueur et sélectionneur. Comme il a également sans doute moins de prédispositions que Michel Platini et Zinédine Zidane.
