Le retrait de Contador devrait confirmer le déclin du cyclisme espagnol. 7 août 2017. Sur une vidéo postée sur son compte Twitter, Alberto Contador annonce à ses fans qu’il compte prendre sa retraite à l’issue de la Vuelta. Même s’il n’a réellement été effectif qu’après les critériums asiatiques d’octobre, le retrait du Pistolero est désormais une réalité, qui laisse l’Espagne orpheline.
